How to make rockwool acoustic panels

This short video shows you how to make broadband acoustic panels or bass traps for treating music studio rooms, performance rooms or home theater rooms.

The panels that I made are 119cm x 61cm x 5cm but the dimensions can be customized to your own requirements. Rockwool can be purchased at a variety of thicknesses depending on your requirements. If you do make thicker panels you might need a mid supporting piece of wood as the fabric alone might not be able to hold the weight in the center. Mine are mounted at reflection points to dampen the room acoustics. If you wish to use them as bass traps then it's best to space them away from the walls and make them thicker. Alternatively they can be mounted across room corners but I recommend making them thicker if you intend to do this. You can use a fabric of your choice as long as it's fairly porous/thin. Try blowing through it!

Purchase rockwool or rocksill panels of the rigid type (not the rolls) as it's fairly easy to work with and can be cut with scissors or a knife. I got mine from my builder who got it from his local building supplies company. If you don't want to make these yourself then gik.com is a good place to order ready made panels. I believe they work out at about £50 per panel. I made mine for about £15 per panel although the quality and workmanship is likely to be much better on those that were made professionally!

Minwax expert Bruce Johnson and Martha Stewart show easy wood staining tips.

Spruce up an old piece of wood furniture with Minwax expert Bruce Johnson and Martha Stewart. Minwax water based stain formulas are offered in a variety of stain colors. Make sure you are working with a good, solid hard wood. Use a 150- or 180-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the wood surface in the direction of the grain. Then, select your stain color.

In our first project, Martha Stewart chose Minwax Water Based Express Color in Emerald stain. Minwax Express Color is stain and finish in one step and provides easy cleanup since it is water based. To apply, squirt the express color directly on to the wood and work in with a rag or heavy-duty paper towel. Like all stains, the longer you leave the stain on the wood, the richer the color will be. Once the stain is applied, wipe off the excess stain. If you want a richer stain color, let the first coat dry for an hour and apply a second coat of stain.

For the second project, Bruce Johnson has a wood pedestal that has crevices. To apply stain, put the Minwax Express Color in a small dish and apply with a foam brush. Work the stain into the wood cracks and crevices with a foam brush. Because it is water based, there will be low odor and easy cleanup.

To stain a tabletop, squirt Minwax Express Color on the tabletop and work into the wood grain with a rag or heavy-duty paper towel. In this example, Bruce Johnson selected the stain color of Walnut. Make sure to work stain into the entire surface of the table before the stain sets up, wiping in the direction of the grain. Prepare grooves with wood primer first so that the excess stain can be easily removed. Wipe off the excess stain to let the wood grain show through. Be sure to wipe excess stain out of grooves and cracks as well.

To add additional protection and sheen, apply Minwax Water Based Polycrylic Protective Finish with a synthetic bristle brush. Do not use a foam brush, as it will add bubbles, and a natural bristle brush will swell out of shape. Dip the brush into the Polycrylic and wipe in the direction of the wood grain. Minwax Water Based Polycrylic Protective Finish comes in multiple sheens: gloss, semi-gloss, and satin. Bruce Johnson is using semi-gloss.
