How to Wash, Stain & Seal Your Wood Deck

A deck is a place to host family and friends and to relax on, but like most homeowners, a wood deck can experience the worst of what mother nature has to offer. Protect your investment by cleaning and treating your deck and extend its life. However, when is the right time to treat your deck? Once every 6 months drop a few drops of water on your deck and see if the water beads up or soaks into the wood. If it beads up you are good, but if it soaks into the wood, it's time to stain.

There are four basic finishes when it comes to staining your deck: Clear/Natural, Toner, Semi-Transparent and Solid. Check the manufacturers instructions for the amount of stain you will need. There are 3 basic steps to treating your deck: surface prep cleaning and staining. And older deck will need to be clean, dry and porous for stain penetration and adhesion.

The first step is cleaning. Using sandpaper, sand and smooth the deck, and brush off with a broom. Next you will need to strip the wood. Using a sprayer apply the wood stripper and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Then apply a wood brightener and let that sit for 15-20 minutes too. If either the wood stripper or the wood brightener start to dry lightly mist with a hose. Using a brush, rid of any trouble spots such as mold or mildew. Finally rinse off the deck with a pressure washer. Let the deck stand for 48 hours or until completely dry.

Once the deck is dry it is time for the stain. Tape a piece of plastic to the house about 3 feet high to prevent the stain from hitting the house. To stain you will need stain, a paint roller, 2' and 4" brushes and tray and mineral spirits for cleanup. Pour the stain in the paint tray and using the paint roller apply a thin coat to the deck. Work from end to the other making sure the stain penetrates the wood. Generally two coats are better than one. Use paint brushes to paint the rails and beams.

Let the deck dry for about 48 hours and when it is done dying, add furniture and you are done. For more helpful videos like these, visit https://www.Lowes.com/Videos.
